Character Name: Kon-El/Superboy/Conner Kent
Series: DC Comics
Age: COMPLICATED. Physically and mentally, he's about 19. But he's only been alive about five years. And these are numbers based on vague guessing because comics are tricky. And I'm not even thinking about time travel or that year he didn't age! If DC ever actually puts out some sort of official age, I will retcon this.
From When?:Shortly after Damian joins the Teen Titans, but before they're called away on their first mission. The end of Teen Titans, pre-reboot
Inmate/Warden: Warden! Kon is very much a hero. He's been saving the world since he first came out of the test tube! He's got a really strong moral compass and doesn't go more evil then cheating on tests, usually. The only exceptions involve mind control.
At his canon point, he's going to do some good in exchange for the Admiral's help getting Kent Farm out of trouble so that Ma Kent can keep living in comfort and health.
Item: Black leather bracelet he wears around his wrist.
Abilities/Powers: He can fly. He has super strength, super speed, and invulnerability. He's got x-ray vision, telescopic vision, heat vision, super hearing, and freeze breath. On top of that, he's got tactile telekinesis, which allows him to manipulate things he's touching. His weaknesses include magic, kryptonite, and red sun energy. Also, he's more vulnerable to energy attacks than Superman is. However, kryptonite and the light of a red sun do not cancel out his tactile telekinesis, since that's not Kryptonian. He also has training to help throw off mind control, and he is skilled at hand-to-hand combat even without his strength.
On the Barge, the lack of yellow sun means Kon (and his dog) lose their Kryptonian powers, leaving him with just TTK, though that does allow him to mimic most of the physical powers (Flight, strength, etc.) but not quite as powerful as they'd be if they were Kryptonian. And then in yellow sunned ports perhaps he gains them back.
Personality: Not many people can say they've been superheroing all their lives and mean it literally. Kon, however, can claim it without any exaggeration. He's a clone of Superman, grown in a laboratory, and he fought his first villain less than a day after he escaped, and he has very rarely taken a vacation since then.
Kon fights crime for a lot of reasons. Partly it's because it is what he was built for. As I mentioned, he's been doing it his whole life. The very idea of not being a hero is pretty much unthinkable. The scientists at CADMUS labs programmed it into him so that he'd be a good Superman replacement. He's also got an incredibly strong moral compass and would never intentionally hurt someone… unless they were hurting others, of course. But even then, he won't kill. He just doesn't do that.
Though it often doesn't look like it, he takes his superhero duties very seriously. He'll joke, he'll goof around, but the second there's a crisis, he's there, in the middle of it all, fighting the good fight. Especially early in his career, Superboy was considered immature and irresponsible, but that's never really been true. Sure, he'd make money off his own brand name and show off for girls and generally act like a goof, but that didn't stop him from doing what was right.
Names are important to Kon. The first name he ever had to himself was "Superboy." His friends called him "S.B." or "the Kid" because he didn't have a real name, just the heroic moniker. When Superman gave him the Kryptonian name "Kon-El," Kon actually cried out of joy for having a real name. Being a hero is, of course, important, but having a name made him more than a hero. It made him a person. Finding the balance between the super and the boy has always been part of Kon's struggle. For a very long time, he had no secret identity, and people targeted his house and school because of it. Though living openly allowed him a freedom few heroes have, it caused a lot of trouble, so when he moved to Smallville he took a third, human name. "Conner Kent." But first and foremost, he'll always be Superboy. On the barge, he'll be Superboy or Kon-El, and Conner only to his closest friends. This is because his reason for wardening is because he feels as a superhero, he's qualified. Conner Kent is a decent enough guy, but not really a staunch moral person. Just a normal kid, and a mask for Superboy, which Kon feels is more his true self. Also, hiding his superpowers for all that time is just not happening.
Kon loves his superpowers. He's always had them, of course, so you'd think he'd be used to them, but he never stops loving what he can do. Flying, of course, is awesome. Superstrength is pretty fun too. His super-vision powers, and superhearing and heat vision and the power he's most recently developed, freeze breath, are incredibly cool, especially since they're newer. But the power he most brags about, the power that no one else, not even his Superman has, is tactile-telekinesis, the ability to manipulate things he's touching. The reason this power means so much to him is because it represents why he's not just a second-rate Superman. He's got his own special power that makes him unique. And as a clone, sometimes it's hard for him to see himself as having his own identity.
Kon is half-Kryptonian, half-human, and though he's always idolized the donor of his Kryptonian genetic material, Superman, the human side is distinctly more problematic. His human genes are from Lex Luthor, known for being one of Superman's greatest foes, an evil megalomaniac, and a person who went bald at an early age. All of these things are very worrying, and Kon has in the past worried about whether the evilness in his genetics doomed him to become evil as well. When Lex Luthor took control of his mind and forced him to fight his friends, it didn't help these fears. But he has since come to the conclusion that he will never be Lex Luthor, and the supergenes overpower the evil genes.
He doesn't always have the best judgment when it comes to women. When he first started heroing, he had an adolescent libido and none of the learned shyness and tact most teens had. That led to him making some very bad decisions based entirely on the hotness of the woman involved, such as signing on with sketchy agent Rex Leech because his daughter Roxy was sexy. Roxy and Kon later became really close, almost like siblings, but they only got that opportunity because he had the hots for her. Even when he started dating reporter Tana Moon, Kon continued to make bad decisions and flirt and enjoy the company of women other than Tana, to her frustration. He never cheated, but he flirted and looked a lot. And then there was Knockout. She was a Female Fury from Apokolips who very quickly seduced him, and he wouldn't hear a word against her even when everyone he knew and trusted told him she was bad. He didn't believe them until she blatantly admitted that she'd killed a cop and didn't care, and that she wanted Kon to basically join her and go evil. In the end, though, Kon's morality overpowered his feelings for her, and he defeated her. He didn't really cool down around girls until he started dating Wonder Girl. Their relationship developed slowly, over several years, and though she had a long-lasting crush on him, they were mostly just friends up until he confessed his feelings for her. Things got complicated, of course, but after that moment, Kon wasn't really interested in any other girls besides her.
Kon has a pretty big ego and cares a lot about his looks, though considering his first costume and haircut, you wouldn't know it to look at him. But he cares about being attractive and liked and generally useful. He wants to be a good hero, as good as Superman, and as far as he's concerned, that would give him the most worth. He's mostly good-natured and happy, and definitely not prone to Battish brooding. That being said, he covers up a lot of insecurities. He didn't want anyone, even Superman, to know about his Luthor DNA at first out of fear that they'd reject him for it. He couldn't bare the thought of losing his friends.
As a clone, Kon doesn't really have a normal family. That's never stopped him from carving out a family out of the friends he's got. Roxy Leech became like a sister to him, and Dubbilex and the Guardian were both father figures. Even Rex, in his sleazy way, was family. When he moves to Smallville, Martha and Jonathan Kent become his mother and father, even if to the world they're his uncle and aunt.
His most important family, though, is his friends. First Young Justice, then the Teen Titans. These are other superhero kids with backstories as complicated as his, and they support each other in ways no one else can. He and his two best friends, Bart Allen and Tim Drake, have been through so much together that they trust each other with everything. Of course, Tim was the last to open up about things, but he's a Bat, so that wasn't surprising. Still, that Kon and Bart have gotten him to open up as much as they have is amazing. They tease, they share secrets, they play. Bart had as strange and short a childhood as Kon, so the two can goof off together and be kids like they never really were. Tim doesn't tend to goof off, so Kon and Bart sometimes have to make him. Tim is the one who helped Kon through his clone angst when he didn't feel like he could trust anyone else with the big secret. One of his other friends, Raven, helped him finally start to heal from his horrible mind control ideal by showing him that he did have a soul, and that he'd made it himself. Kon loves his friends, and would support and protect them in any way he can, because that's what you do with family.
His other family, namely Superman and Supergirl, are a bit more complicated. He and Supergirl are pretty close, and he easily considers her his cousin. Superman, though, is another story. Kon looks up to Superman more than anyone else, but Superman didn't really know what to do with Kon at first. It's like finding out you have an illegitimate child, only without the fun sex part. Kon would have liked Superman to take a more active, parental role in his life, but he never really did. Eventually, though, he started acting like a cool older cousin, giving Kon a name and his own family. Though Kon sometimes has mixed feelings about Clark, he mostly likes him, and taking over for him someday is his greatest wish.
Kon is brash and headstrong and occasionally reckless. He has a stubborn, determined streak that comes from his Luthor side, though he wouldn't like to think of it like that. He's pretty intelligent, but doesn't really think of himself as smart since he doesn't do great in school and is friends with a genius like Tim and Bart, who's read an entire library. He loves life and showing off. When he loses a friend, he finds it hard to keep going. He gave his life to save the universe without even hesitating, and he wouldn't hesitate if it came to it again. He has an occasionally short temper and an extremely stupid sense of humor. He's loyal to a fault and almost always see the best in people. He trusts easily and often foolishly. He's not a very good liar because of aforementioned trusting, and the aforementioned incredibly strong moral compass. He loves life in the city and on the farm. He makes friends everywhere and in every time period he visits. He has pretty horrible taste in costumes. He messes up, sometimes in big ways, sometimes in catastrophic ways, sometimes in unavoidable ways, and he ends up taking the blame onto himself even when it's not necessarily his fault. He's a kid in some ways, and grown up too fast in others. But first and foremost, he's a hero, and that's the side that shines most brightly.
ETA: Kon is coming back with his memories of the Barge intact. He wasn't on the barge long, but he was there enough to make some new friends and try and man up to do the Superman inspiration thing. He wasn't as good at it as the real Superman, but trying was an interesting and scary experience. When he returns to the Barge, he may try it again, but also might go on just being himself, if Batman's not around to push him into it.
History: Riiiiight over here!
Sample Journal Entry: [There's a crash, followed by a sort of rush of color, then the white nose of a dog comes into view. Then there's a shout from the other side of the room.]
Krypto! I told you not to get into my things!
[The dog barks, then the snout disappears, and after a moment, Kon picks up the camera. He's a teenager, very muscular, and wearing a black t-shirt with a red S-shield on it. He grins sheepishly.]
Sorry about that. That's my dog, Krypto. He's usually pretty good, but this place is totally new for him, so he's kind of excited.
[He turns the camera to show the dog, who is white all over and wearing a red cape. He's also floating a foot off the ground.]
That wasn't exactly how I planned to introduce myself, but while I'm here…
I'm Kon-El. I'm gonna be a warden here. I'm also called Superboy. Mostly because Superman's already taken by the guy I was cloned from. I've never been a warden before, but I've saved the world a few times, so I figure this can't be much harder than that, right?
So who else is here? Any other superheroes?
Sample RP: Kon picked up the log and hurled it towards the moon. Krypto barked and flew after it.
Kon laughed. "Go get it, boy," he said, floating backwards. He watched Krypto flying into space and fed the chickens at superspeed while waiting for the dog to get back. Krypto barked sharply as Kon shook the last of the feed out of the bag. He flew out and saw Krypto sitting on top of the log and wagging his tail.
"Good boy!" Kon grinned and flew over. Krypto stuck out his tongue and barked again, and Kon scratched his ears. Then he picked up the log and threw it into space again. Krypto flew after it at high speed. Kon grinned and squinted up after him.
"Conner!" Martha yelled from the farmhouse. "I cooked pancakes! Would you like some?"
Kon flew over to her and nodded. "When have you ever known me to turn down pancakes?" he asked.
She chuckled. "There's always a first time. Have you finished your chores?"
"Uh," he gave an embarrassed grin. "Some of them?"
Martha raised an eyebrow. "You have superspeed. You can do them all in under a minute."
"Yeah, but--" Krypto flew up behind him and dropped the log in the driveway. Martha gave him a look.
"…I'll get right on those chores, huh?" he said, grinning guiltily.
"Mmm. The pancakes will be waiting when you finish." Martha turned to go back into the house. "And clear away that log, please!"
"Yeah, yeah." He flew over to Krypto. "Sit," he said. Krypto obediently sat. "Stay." Kon threw the log as far into the woods as he could. Krypto didn't go after it, but he whined a little. Kon pet his head. "We'll go play later, boy. Okay?" Krypto wagged his tail.
Together they flew away to finish up all the farm chores. After all, there were pancakes waiting.
Special Notes: Krypto the Superdog will be coming with! He's very well smart and well-trained, though he might attack anyone who tries to harm Kon and his powers are reduced on-Barge just like Kon's.
