Maybe

Kon is asleep in front of the TV when the phone rings. There had been a Wendy marathon earlier, though it's over. Sure, he's seen 'em all, and he owns 'em all on DVD, but he still likes watching.

The phone wakes him up and he falls off the couch. Well, floats off. It's not like he ever pays attention to gravity. He yawns, floats upright, and flies over to grab the phone.

"'lo?" he says sleepily.

"Kon, it's Bart. Listen, Cassie--"

And Kon is no longer half asleep. He's all too horribly painfully awake. He knows that tone. Something terrible has happened. "I--is she alive?" he manages to say.

"Yeah. But it's bad."

"I need to. Shit. How could--I should have. Are you going to see her?"

"We're going now, yeah."

"Where?"

"Diana says she's in the hospital."

It's bad. Cassie's hurt. Cassie could have died.

"I'm coming too," Kon said quietly.

Bart doesn't say he's glad Kon is going or make a big deal about it or anything like that. He just says, "Okay," and hangs up. Kon puts down the phone slowly, then quietly crumbles.

His first thought is that it's all his fault. If he'd been there, he could have protected her. She could have called him in for back-up. He didn't even know she'd be in danger. He was watching TV. All his fault for that stupid fight and that stupid break up and so stupid not to talk to people who could get hurt and die. Why the hell was he wasting time being mad? What if next time Cassie did die? He could have had her back. Next time he will.

He takes a moment to collect himself. He manages to calmly fly down and tell Aunt Martha what has happened. She hugs him tightly and lets him fly out the door.

The flight over is both far too long and not nearly long enough. Before he can collect his thoughts, he's at the hospital, getting through security without quite knowing how, and standing in the doorway of Cassie's room.

She's unconscious on the bed. Tim's sitting next to her. Bart and Cissie. His friends. Why does it always take an injury or a funeral to remind them that they need each other?

They're watching him. No one's said anything yet. No one really needs to.

Kon steps into the room and flies over. He lands and looks at Cassie, and it still hurts a little to know she's Tim's and not his, but it hurts more that she was hurt, that things could have gone worse and he would have never seen her again. He wants to hug her but he doesn't know if it's safe to touch her.

Everyone's still watching him. Waiting for him to say something. But Kon isn't sure what to say.

So he doesn't say anything. He pulls Cissie and Bart in with one arm and Tim in with another one and hugs them tightly.

Everything isn't all right. Cassie's still hurt. Kon still doesn't like how everything ended with Cassie and Tim. But he can't lose his friends. Really, without them he's been lost.

But this might be a step. Things maybe might get better.

Maybe's better than never.
