Catch My Fall
[ For
cisskabob's prompt on my some meme drabble thingummie. I assume I have permission, since she asked for it. ;-) ]
Cissie didn't even realize she'd fallen asleep until she heard the latch on the window click open.
"Tim?" she sat up.
Kon shook his head. "Other man in your life. Hey, Cissie. How you holding up?"
"Oh, you know. My boyfriend's been away for over a week without so much as a message to tell me he's still alive. So, fantastic." she walked over and gave him a worried look. "Tell me you bring good news."
He paused. "Well, he's alive and sends his love. That's good, right?"
Her eyes narrowed. "And the bad news?"
Kon winced. "You're not gonna like it."
"Tell me."
Kon sighed and sat on the couch heavily. "He was hurt. Bad. Ra's patched him up, but he's not coming home anytime soon."
"I—" Cissie's hand tightened around her elbow. "He's alive. And well? Why can't he come home?"
"Something about trying to completely overthrow the League from inside of it. He wouldn’t let me stay long. Cissie, he'll be okay. I got him to promise to use the signal watch if he needs it. He'll be fine."
His words were barely reaching her ears. Tim wasn't coming home yet. Tim was injured and Ra's Al Ghul was taking care of him, not Cissie.
She didn't even realize her legs had given out until Kon had flown across the room to catch her. "Cissie!"
She looked up at him. "He's not coming back. He'll be killed or worse and I'll never see him again."
Kon hugged her, hard. "That's not true. He's Tim, Ciss. If anyone can do this, he can. And I checked before I left. He's okay. He'll be able to make it."
Cissie didn't answer. She just buried her head on Kon's shoulder and sobbed. Kon held her close, rubbing her back gently as she cried.
She wasn't sure how long they sat like that. She knew eventually she stopped crying. Kon picked her up and sat her down on the couch. She didn't quite manage to let go of him, but he didn't seem to mind.
After a while, she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "Don't tell Tim I fell apart like this," she said in a small voice. "I am okay with what he's doing, really. It's just too much sometimes."
Kon was quiet for a moment, then he nodded. "You got it, Ciss. Want me to crash on your couch instead of going back to my room tonight?"
Cissie nodded. "Thanks, Kon. That'd be really nice."
He grinned a little and nudged her. "Not really. Your cooking's just a lot better than campus food."
She gave a shaking laugh and hugged him again. "Thanks."
He hugged her back. "Yeah, you're welcome."
